Our first stop on our journey down south was Sesame Place. What a fun place! At first, Claire was a little timid around the characters but soon warmed up a lot! By the end, she was hugging and blowing kisses to all of them. She also enjoyed riding her first amusement park rides. We think she has the stomach for rides because even when Stephanie had the teacups spinning at what felt like warp speed for me, Claire loved it! After that, we headed to Staunton, VA to visit with my great aunt and cousins. They have a beautiful house in with an amazing view which was a nice break from the car rides and hotels.
The remainder of the month was spent in Charlotte visiting with Wade's mother. Its always nice to be with family after you have been away for so long. It was also nice to get a break from my full time mommy job for a little while.
Wade and I will be celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary this year. We won't be together, of course. It has become quite the tradition of not getting to celebrate our anniversary together. Year one and two he was out to sea, year three Claire was 5 days old and last year we were moving and had no babysitter. This year we thought would be the year to break tradition, but of course, he will be out to sea. SO, instead, we celebrated early by taking a trip to Charleston with our best friends, Thomas and Stephanie. It was one of the best weekends we have had in a long time.
The last two grueling weeks have been spent in our home in VA. Last week, my mother graciously watched Claire for a whole week so we could come up here and work on the house. We bought the house before we left for CA 3 years ago and have had renters in it since then. Needless to say, it needed work. Wade replaced all of the flooring downstairs with wood floors. This week, the painters are here painting the whole house. There is so much more to do! But I think we are learning that as a homeowner, you always have a list of projects you need (or want) to do.
Claire and Maggie seem to have adjusted well to the move to the new house. I painted and wallpapered Claire's room myself and she has a great playroom. She also has a yard she can play in (vs the rocks for lawn in CA) and a temperature she can go outside in (vs freezing temps in RI). Maggie is a little sad because she spent the whole month with my mom's dog but I think she will come around.
Wade begins ship-life again on Monday. He is nervous about starting his new job but looking forward to the challenge and being able to apply all he has learned in the last few years. I am sure it will be a difficult change for all of us when he is gone out to sea, but we will make it!
